Mr & Miss Hampshire Training Day Recap

Organiser of Mr & Miss Hampshire Paula Langley emailed some great tips and advice through from our training day a few weeks back. They're so great I asked if I could republish them for guys and girls around the country to learn from if they are applicable. Paula covered a number of rounds that are included at local and national level, so I hope some of these tips are relevant!

Raising money for charity including setting up a Virgin Giving Page
We discussed different ways of not just raising charity money but of getting involved in local charities.  This is the cornerstone of our competition and the most important part for me.  If you only raise £10 that is better than nothing so do please get working and let me know what you are doing for this round.  You can find Beauty With a Purpose on Virgin Money Giving page and this is often the easiest way of donating.

PR
This round is to teach you self promotion.  Local, and even national, newspapers love a good pageant story.  Find an angle and sell it to them along with a killer photo and you are sure to get yourself in the paper.  Particularly the Mr Hampshires - this is the first time we have ever run this competition and so that is unique in itself.  When you are in the paper, send me the link for our page.  If you have a story to share, of a struggle you have overcome or a challenge you have faced, then that will sell your story even more and may help inspire other people with the same challenge - this is what we aim to do!

Social Media
Again, this is about self-promotion.  Social media is an amazing marketing tool for any business or person and you should learn how to use it.  The best way to get likes on your photo is not just to share it but to encourage others to share it and pass it on. Please and thank you help as well as an explanation as to why you are doing it and why they should bother supporting you.  Share the good work you are doing with your charities and like their Facebook page and share what they do on your page.  That way you are directly supporting the charity by encouraging others to read what they do.

Talent
Everyone has a talent.  It can be what you do for a living or for a hobby.  It can be that you are great in the gym or that you lift weights or bake cakes or draw amazing pictures or sing or dance. The film just needs to show this and can be done on your phone - it does not have to be a professional film as that is not what is being judged - your talent is.  Remember that you are scored for each round and so if you don’t enter that makes it a zero!  It is better to enter something rather than nothing!

Eco Outfits

This outfit has to be worn for a catwalk on the night of the final and so must be completed by then.  Make sure it will stand up to walking!  You have to be able to tell the audience about it so make it something special to you.

This round is about sustainable fashion - so it can be from a charity shop or given to you by someone else or a dress you have worn in the past for a special occasion or something you have made yourself out of recyclable materials.  Last year’s Miss Hants Eco winner made her dress completely out of old ties raided from male friends and family and charity shops. These had then been sewn in to a full length dress.  It was imaginative and had taken lots of effort and the contestant spoke really well about it - saying it was like having her friends and family with her etc etc. You have to impress the judges so be creative. Check out the film of the Miss England finalists for inspiration. The whole final is only £15 to download and keep or just £1.99 to rent.

  • Relax
  • Take a breath before answering

  • Don’t learn answers off by heart but instead know what you really feel the answer to the questions is for you.
Questions you might be asked:
  • Why do you want to be Mr or Miss H?
  • Why did you enter?

  • What qualities do you have that would make you a good Miss or Mr H?
  • Tell us about an experience you have had that would make you a good ambassador for Hampshire.
What to do with your appearance

  • Beware of too much make up as lights are normal and not stage lights.
